BPH risk factors

BPH occurs when the prostate gland becomes enlarged. This condition can block the flow of urine from your bladder, potentially causing UTIs and discomfort during urination.

Age is the primary risk factor for BPH, with the chances of developing the condition increasing after age 60 and further increasing after age 85.

Symptoms of BPH

Typically, about half of people experiencing BPH will develop symptoms requiring treatment, such as:

  • Incomplete emptying — Feeling like your bladder is full, even after passing urine
  • Increased urination frequency — Needing to pass urine often, about every one to two hours
  • Increased urination urgency — Feeling the urgent need to pass urine, as if you cannot wait
  • Intermittency — Needing to stop and start several times when passing urine
  • Nocturia — Needing to wake up at night more than two times to pass urine
  • Straining — Struggling to start passing urine or needing to push or strain to pass urine
  • Weak stream — A weak urine flow

If BPH becomes severe, you might not be able to pass urine at all. This is an emergency that you must get treatment for immediately.

BPH treatment options

We understand that choosing a treatment option can be overwhelming, as it often forces men to compromise in various ways, such as:

  • Experiencing issues with sexual function
  • Facing a potentially long recovery time
  • Getting limited relief
  • Responding poorly to medication

BPH aims to minimize these undesirable outcomes. We were among the first hospitals to offer minimally invasive, robotic aquablation. This method targets and removes the obstructing tissue of the enlarged prostate without requiring incisions or heat.

We recommend speaking with your doctor or one of our urologists to determine if you are a candidate, and what treatment option is best for your healthcare needs.
