Transplant services

When an organ is compromised by trauma or begins to fail, a transplant may be the most suitable treatment. Transplants involve removing a healthy organ or tissue from a donor to replace a diseased organ, blood or bone marrow in a recipient.

End-stage renal disease (ESRD) risk factors

With chronic kidney disease, your kidneys can lose their ability to function correctly. If the condition reaches the point where kidney function is at 15% or less of maximum capacity, the diagnosis can become known as end-stage renal disease (ESRD). If you or your loved one's condition reaches that point, getting a kidney transplant is crucial for positive outcomes.

Kidney transplant surgery

Kidney transplant surgery is the process of placing a donor kidney into the body of a compatible transplant recipient. The donor kidney must be compatible with the recipient's blood and tissue in order for the donated kidney to successfully function.

Types of kidney transplants

There are two main types of kidney transplants:

  • Deceased donor — Kidney taken from a deceased person who volunteered to be a donor before they died.
  • Living donor — Kidney removed from a living person who has chosen to donate while they are still alive. People who might be good candidates for a match include parents, sisters, brothers, cousins, aunts, uncles, or even wives, husbands, friends and co-workers of the recipient.

Selection criteria of kidney transplant recipients

To be determined eligible to receive a transplant, you must meet certain requirements, which are based on your personal health and well-being. You can learn more about the requirements by calling the transplant center.

Transplant evaluation

People who wish to be considered for a kidney transplant must complete an application that includes information from their medical records. Once our transplant coordinator has determined that the applicant meets the selection criteria, we will verify their insurance information.

After attending a class to learn about transplants, the applicant is then required to take several tests, including:

  • Blood work
  • Stress tests
  • Ultrasounds
  • Urine samples
  • X-rays

Finally, the applicant will meet with the transplant team to determine if a transplant is the best decision for their situation.

Kidney transplant program application
