Wound Management Services

Wound healing is a complex process. When this process is disrupted, specialized intervention is often necessary. Las Palmas Medical Center offers a full spectrum of wound care including both wound assessment and the most advanced treatment technologies.

Problem wounds are often associated with underlying medical conditions, so our Wound Care program takes an integrated, multidisciplinary approach to wound treatment. We coordinate wound treatment plans with both primary care and specialty care physicians to create a comprehensive treatment program that meets the individual needs of each patient.

Wounds that can benefit from the specialized intervention offered in our Wound Care program include:

  • Burns, first and second degree
  • Traumatic wounds
  • Complex post-surgical wounds
  • Diabetic Ulcers
  • Venous Ulcers
  • Pressure Sores
  • Radiation Wounds
  • Cellulitis management
  • Peripheral arterial disease
  • Wounds due to poor blood flow
  • Wound that will not heal from nutritional deficiencies or medication use
  • Animal/insect bites
  • Evaluation for hyperbaric chamber management

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBO)

HBO is a painless, non-invasive therapy used to treat wounds that are not healing properly. HBO is administered in a specialized chamber where the pressure is increased to two or three times normal atmospheric pressure while the patient breathes 100 percent pure oxygen. This treatment increases oxygen levels in the blood and tissue fluids, producing a healing effect when disease processes decrease tissue oxygen levels.

Physicians usually refer patients to HBO for the treatment of non-healing wounds, such as diabetic ulcers or problem wounds resulting from surgery or radiation therapy. Some patients received therapy that combines HBO with other wound management techniques.

Disorders for which HBO may be indicated include:

  • Air or gas embolism
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning and smoke inhalation
  • Clostridial myonecrosis or gas gangrene
  • Crush injuries, compartment syndrome, and other acute traumatic ischemias
  • Decompression sickness
  • Necrotizing soft tissue infections
  • Osteomyleitis
  • Radiation tissue damage
  • Skin grafts and flaps
